MSCW holds ‘Yashoda AI’ awareness prog for women

NCW-backed Yashoda AI programme boosts AI and cyber‑safety awareness among women

The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in collaboration with the National Commission for Women (NCW), organised a one-day awareness programme on “Yashoda AI” on Thursday at the Jubilee Hall of D.M. College of Teacher Education, Imphal.

The programme was attended by Th. Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women; Sk. Sophia, Member, MSCW; W. Phajatombi Devi, MCS, Member Secretary, MSCW and Additional Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Manipur; and Dr. Anita Kangabam, Principal-in-Charge, D.M. College of Teacher Education, as presidium members.

Purpose and background

Th. Tiningpham Monsang said the MSCW serves as an important platform for women facing violence, discrimination or other hardship. She noted the Commission regularly organises seminars and awareness programmes across the state to educate women about their constitutional and legal rights, as many remain unaware of available protections.

About Yashoda AI

She said “Yashoda AI” is a nationwide initiative launched by the NCW to promote artificial intelligence (AI) literacy and digital awareness among women. The programme held today is the first of its kind in Manipur under NCW sponsorship.

Objectives

Highlighting the initiative’s objectives, Monsang said the programme aims to empower women by enhancing understanding of AI, promoting digital literacy, strengthening online safety and cyber security, encouraging self‑reliance through technology, and developing leadership skills.

Cyber risks and prevention

She warned that while AI offers opportunities for innovation, it also brings challenges such as cyber fraud and online scams. Citing fraudulent calls and messages claiming bank deposits, she emphasised the need for digital vigilance. Resource persons, including banking professionals, explained common cyber frauds and precautionary measures during the programme.

Expressing satisfaction over students’ enthusiastic participation, Monsang said such awareness programmes help build digital knowledge among young people and turn them into responsible technology users and awareness ambassadors.

MSCW role and powers

W. Phajatombi Devi outlined the MSCW’s role in promoting women’s welfare and addressing grievances related to violence, harassment, discrimination and rights violations. She said the Commission registers complaints and takes action within its legal mandate, exercising certain powers similar to a civil court in its jurisdiction, and refers complex matters to family or criminal courts when necessary.

Operational challenges

Phajatombi Devi acknowledged challenges such as limited manpower and resources but said the Commission continues to function effectively with government support through gender budget assistance and other resources. She reiterated the Commission’s regular statewide awareness work on women’s rights, safety and empowerment.

AI in education

In the technical session, resource person Lamyanba Waikhom, MBA, spoke on “AI in Education and Pedagogy,” highlighting AI’s transformative role in teaching and learning. The programme was attended by teachers, students and other participants.
