A massive landslide that ripped through the Khampasom Tang neighbourhood in Ukhrul Town in the early hours of Wednesday has left four school‑going children in critically condition.
According to reports, the slide, which occurred at around 12:30 am, sent a slab of hillside estimated to be nearly 200 feet high crashing onto a reinforced‑cement‑concrete (RCC) house belonging to Mahai NK of Chingai village. Two rooms and three kitchens were flattened, and the sudden impact sent panic through the occupants.
Among the injured were four students namely Shingmathing, Class XI, St. Joseph College; Woryar, Class VII, Junior Academy; Phungramngam, Class IX, Junior Academy; all siblings and children of Pamchui Awungshi of Khamasom Phungrei and Yakhari Kasar, daughter of Chihanso Kasar and Rinchui Jamang of Khangkhui Phungdhar (Khunou) village.
Sources said nine-year-old Yakhari was found buried under a mound of mud with only her head protruding. Neighbours and other occupants of the house worked frantically with shovels and bare hands to free her. She was pulled out alive but immediately suffered severe injuries.
Her 23‑year‑old aunt, Leiyachan Jamang, who was also present in the house, sustained leg and back injuries while helping with the rescue. She remains hospitalized in stable condition, though.
Yakhari was rushed to the Ukhrul District Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she is in a critical state. Both of her legs are reportedly paralysed, and X-ray imaging shows internal bleeding with fluid accumulation in the abdomen.
Yakhari is the eldest of four siblings and a student at KTL Higher Secondary School. She comes from a marginalised family. Because of limited means, she had been staying with her aunt in a rented room at Mahai NK’s house while pursuing her studies. Leiyachan Jamang works part‑time at a local shop to support the household and to pay for Yakhari’s school fees.
