Security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition in two coordinated operations across Imphal East and Kakching districts on Friday, officials said.
Big haul at Awa-Ching
A combined security team searching Awa-Ching under Porompat police station in Imphal East recovered a variety of weapons and explosives, police said. Items seized included one .32 pistol with magazine, two 12-bore double-barrel guns, thirteen 12-bore single-barrel guns, one .22 rifle with magazine and telescope, two 9 mm pistols with magazines, six hand grenades with detonators, three BAOFENG wireless sets, fourteen rounds of ammunition of assorted calibers, three anti-riot grenades, and an assortment of rubber bullets and tear-smoke shells.
The police described the recovery as significant, noting the mix of small arms, explosives and communication equipment that could have been used to mount attacks or supply armed groups. Investigations at the Awa-Ching site are ongoing, officers said.
Large cache unearthed in Kakching
Separately, acting on credible information about concealed arms, a joint team from the CDO Unit/Kakching, Arong police station and 46 Assam Rifles conducted a search in the Double Khong Marifangbi canal area under Arong PS. The team recovered one 9 mm pistol, one .303 light machine gun (LMG), three INSAS rifles, four single-barrel guns, thirty magazines of various weapons, 2,156 live rounds of ammunition across different calibers, and 157 empty cartridge cases.
Police said the quantity and variety of ammunition recovered in the Kakching-area operation suggest sustained and organised stockpiling, and detectives are following leads to identify the source and intended recipients of the cache.
Awards recognise service, boost morale
In a separate announcement, Manipur Police extended its heartiest congratulations to officers and personnel who were conferred national honours on Independence Day 2026. The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) was awarded to Lokhendro Singh Arambam, Armed Police Sub-Inspector.
Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) were awarded to six personnel: Ningshen Worngam (Inspector General), Sarma Devi Khoisnam (Commandant), Wungpam Kasar (Commandant), Leivon Lemboi Kom (Havildar), Irungbam Shyamsunder Singh (Subedar) and Birla Singh Soraisham (Subedar).
The police said these honours recognise exemplary service, dedication and an unwavering commitment to duty, and that the awards bring pride to the Manipur Police family while inspiring personnel across ranks.
